Introduction · அறிமுகம்
Tharpanam (तर्पणम्) is the offering of water mixed with sesame seeds (til), sacred grass (darbha) and occasionally milk, to satisfy three groups of beings — Devas (celestials), Rishis (sages) and Pitrus (ancestors).

Offered to ancestors — facing South, thread reversed (prachinaveeti)
📅When to perform: Amavasya (New Moon) is mandatory. Also performed on: Grahana (eclipse), Yugadi, Vishu Krama (Uttarayana / Dakshinayana), Mahalaya Paksha (16 days), and during shraddha rituals.
💧What you need: A plate or vessel with water · Black sesame seeds (ellu / til) · Darbha grass (at least 2 pairs) · Sacred thread (yagnopavita) · Clean dhoti · Facing a clean water source or river ideally.

Achamanam · ஆசமனம்
💧Sip water from right palm three times, then touch body parts with the twelve Names of Vishnu — same as in Sandhyavandhanam.
இன்றைய பஞ்சாங்கத்திலிருந்து ஸம்வத்ஸரம், அயனம், ரிது, மாஸம், திதி, வாஸரம், நக்ஷத்திரம் — இவற்றை நிரப்பவும்.

Deva Tharpanam · தேவ தர்ப்பணம்
33 offerings
⭐Face East. Wear sacred thread normally (upavita). Pour water through the tips of the fingers (deva tirtha). Add a few sesame seeds to each offering. Say "tarpayami" while pouring.
🪔Face South. Reverse the sacred thread over the right shoulder (prachinaveeti). Pour water through the space between index finger and thumb (pitru tirtha). Add black sesame seeds to each offering. Substitute actual names where indicated.
पितृभ्यः स्वधा नमः पितरः स्वधा ।
Pitṛbhyaḥ svadhā namaḥ pitaraḥ svadhā —
Salutation to the ancestors with the offering of svadha (the ancestral oblation sound).
